Opposing the war is not the same as supporting Saddam Hussein. Most protestors simply believe that either a) war is not an acceptable means of removing him and his party from power or b) the US should not have started this war in such a unilateral fashion, risking irrevocable harm to our internationaly legitimacy.
There is also a lot of doubt as to the stated reasons we have gone to war. Our government has treated the removal of a corrupt, murderous dictator as essentially a pleasant side effect of our "war on terror" and our quest for the elusive "WMDs," when if anything it should be the primary justification for going to war.
Remember, just because the government says "if you aren't with us, you're against us," it doesn't make it true.
