Considering the Geek Factor on the 'Tron, I am surprised nothing has been said about fanfiction.net's decision to ban all NC-17 and/or real-person fic from the site.

Yes I know, this seems a silly thing to get upset over, but think about it: The internet's largest Fan Fiction archive deciding, from now on, to outlaw their most passionate (no pun intended) contributors and instead emphasize Original Fiction? Alienating thousands of writers (and readers) in one fell swoop, condemning them to crappy ne'er-updated Geocities fanfic outposts?

If I can be colloquial for a moment: WTF is up with THAT?

I am reminded of that famous quote, oft repeated when civil liberties issues are debated:

"First they came for the Mary-Sue-meets-N'Sync smut writers, but I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Mary-Sue-meets-N'Sync smut writer...."

Well, the problem with the whole 'slippery slope' argument is that there are some people who deserve to be pushed down slippery slopes.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but if there's one less hastily written novella where Mulder and I 'finally start gettin' it on' posted on the Internet, that's fine by me.

I do not think this is a case of civil liberties being infringed, after all, this appears to be a private website.

Instead, this is an opportunity. If there is indeed demand for such things, that demand should be met. And why not by you? Web space is inexpensive, and anyone who has time to read this 'fanfiction' would also have time to do the minimal setup work, or to find an interested party to assist.
