Why is it so many threads seem to start off with a high rating and then drop off? Do you have rabid fans pumping up the score?

Some of these people do nothing but refresh the site, waiting... ever waiting for some sort of comedy to emerge.
When the threads DO come out, glistening and fresh from their cocoon-like state, the users are all too pleased to see anything on this site at all.
So they give it an exorbitantly high rating, blind to the crappiness of the thread.
Later users, less awed by the now stale and crusty comedy, rate the thread much lower.
It could also be that some of the readers are just jerks, and don't like to see a highly rated thread.
And want to exercize what they feel are God-like powers of thread lower-atude.
