I'm sad.

"Nightcaster's addition to this genre is that you've got four spell types to work with, and four different sets of each monster to fight, each of which is weak to one particular spell. Hit a red creature with a red spell and you'll get no effect, but whomp it with Winter's Fury and you'll have it begging for mercy".

People that create games like this make me want to cry. Is this it? Is this what I bought an Xbox for? A magical elements-flavored game of paper-rock-scissors? That's gotta be the oldest cliche in the manual. How can IGN, even as useless as it already is, possibly get excited enough about such a "feature" as to pimp it in their preview for Nightcaster? This little system is not an addition to any genre, anywhere. It sounds like the most boring, uninspired gameplay you could possibly create. Yet here's IGN happily telling us this game will be fun because of it!

Obviously IGN is nothing more than a publicity vehicle, and has been for a while. There aren't many big gaming websites, or even magazines for that matter, that aren't. They get their payments for ads, developers get their eternally optimistic previews, and everyone's happy. The more I write the more I can convince myself that I'm foolish for getting so bent out of shape over something so commonplace and easily ignored, so easily written off as "how business works".

But a part of me just can't let this go. I want to run into the IGN office (if they can still afford those) and shake this guy. "What are you doing? The pay's not even that great! Don't you realize the colossal meaninglessness of what you do? Wake up! Write something real! Quit writing! Just don't write anything like that ever again! Are you asleep when you play these things? Expose them for the coasters they are. Stop supporting horrible games."

Am I just totally bonkers for caring so much?

Or am I just totally bonkers for posting it here to the tron?

Only if I get to play as white. Their healing powers counter the black pieces dark magic.
