Actually, corn didn't exist until it was cultivated. It was a wheat-like grass, and was selectively bred into its present form, which cannot survive on its own without the help of the farmer. Just, you know, FYI.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Native Americans ate the seeds of Zea mays far before they started cultivating it and thus selecting for certain traits. They also signficantly modified the landscape so that native Zea populations did not survive to the present day.
The fact that the current cultivar of my species is so phenotypically far removed from my ancestors doesn't mean that my ancestors never existed.
It's like saying Conversatron readers never existed before the Conversatron came along and made them what they are today.
