As more people sign up to Friendster, it experiences an exponential scaling problem. Since it's a free service, it's not like they can bring in enough ad revenue to actually be able to afford the kind of hardware it would take to run the site reliably.

Going to a paid service would essential kill the site, as no one is going to pay money just to get dorky friend request messages. They might be able to get away with free and premium accounts, where the premium account let you link farther out, but I still don't think they'd get enough money to survive.

Therefore, the more people we get to sign up there, the faster they will die, and the sooner we can all stop having to hear about it.
