sublettor

So the asshat who subletted my apartment this summer left the bathroom all nasty, and swiped two pieces of my furniture which he said he'd leave a check for. I showed up today to move the rest of my things out and lo and behold, no money. I called him and he said he couldn't leave it on the fridge like he said he would because I didn't leave him any magnets. (Like he couldn't have stuck it in the door of the fridge instead?!) Then he said he left the check on the counter and it "must have blown outside while we had the door open and were moving things out." I said ok, let me look around, and while I was telling him I was looking under the fridge and the stove just in case it blew under, he nervously said, "Uhm...ok, bye," and hung up on me before I could say anything else.

What an asshole! Am I ever gonna get my money for the furniture? I sold the stuff to him because I thought it would help him out, and plus it was less stuff for me to have to move. But now it's pretty clear that he just wanted to screw me out of a dresser and a chair, even though he acted all nice and thank you thank you blah blah blah for letting him move in for the summer and how nice of me that was.

Is there any way I can get my money? Should I call the cops and tell them my shit was stolen? In a way, it was.

Make him write you another check, it's not as though anyone except you could cash the original anyway.

Plus, he could always cancel the "lost" check.

If that doesn't work, we have a client that deals in,

how should we put this,
