My history professor didn't know the answer to this so I thought I'd ask you: Who invented monotheism, the Egyptians or the Hebrews?

Depending on who you ask, they both did.
Pharaoh Amenhotep IV and his beloved wife, Queen Nefertiti, caused quite a ruckus when they began to worship the sun god Ra solely instead of the usual slew of gods and goddesses.
In all fairness, Ra was originally one of several Egyptian gods, so while he was the first monotheistic god, he was born of polytheistic roots.
The Egyptians' idea of a single deity is thought to have migrated up to Israel and subsequently to the Hebrews who then adopted the one god concept.
In the end, it's more a matter of semantics than anything else.
