Which came first?

My friend brought up a good point.

What came first: The potato, or the potato farmer?

The potato wasn't a potato until it was planted, because it couldn't have just been like "OH! I'm going to grow and be a potato!"

But did the first potato farmer KNOW he was a potato farmer? Did he know "I will be a potato farmer. That is my destiny." Or did it just happen?
