The Topic: difference?

cinevorefilm
Every night on local TV, "ordinary" Philadelphia citizens are shown standing outside, faces painted green, screaming at the top of their lungs, their bare, flabby chests flopping about in the 10 degree weather. For some reason, these people are spoken of herocially and with much praise and not a hint of sarcasm by the media.

Yet when people similarly obsess over, say, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, they are "nerds" or "losers," shunned by society and laughed at by the media.

Can somebody explain to me the difference here?
