What didn't he learn in the initial class that makes linear algebra so hard? Multiplication?

Linear Algebra is hard when one is still contained within the matrix.
Only when one is aware of its presence, can one shape and mold it with simple tools like finding determiants and inverting the matrix.
Whoa! I thought our goal was to subvert the matrix, not invert the matrix.
There is no eigenvector.
Once you understand eigenvectors, you may learn more complicated techniques like how to diagonalize a matrix.
