The Topic: Re: Delorean

You're right, it was totally memorable by itself. The fact that they used it to go back in time didn't help people remember it at all. Honest.

I guess really it's one of those things you don't get unless you're an engineer, because I mean, if you're an engineer and you see the Back to the Future Delorean, you're like, oh, there's the cooling towers, and the power is trasmitted through the undercarriage along those wires, and then at the end, when the wheels fold up underneath like that and you're just like oh, wow!

And the same thing with the Ghostbusters stuff, I mean, these days, if you said you needed some sort of gun to shoot ghosts, they've probably computer-generate this silver-chrome thing or stick a couple fake AK-47s together or something, but no, they make this cyclotron thing with a backpack and you can see actual resistors and flow control valves, and it has a way cool startup noise, and you just get the idea that's it's something an engineer made, and not just something thought up for mass-market appeal or that would look good in happy meals or something, not that that's bad, I mean, I like happy meals, and those toys are cool, but I mean, that's not their whole raison d'etre or whatever.

But I could be biased, you know, because I'm an engineer, and also I'm from an 80s movie that was really into that kind of thing, the equipment and technology and building things and stuff.

So maybe I'm like, you know, full of it.
