So I'm off to make something of myself here at college, or at least that's what they tell me. Now, do you suggest actually taking books to class the first day, or just like, showing up and reading the syllabus?

You never take books to class. In theory you read them outside of class, but in practice, you buy the books, the professors ignore them for the whole semester, and then you sell them back to the bookstore for one tenth the price you paid.
