When entering contract negotiations with his master, a samurai must bring a wakizashi, a cup of hot water, and 3 grains of rice. Once in the presence of his master, the samurai will place the three grains of rice and the cup on the ground before him. He will then disrobe, kneel, and place his scrotum in the cup. Finally he must draw his wakizashi and cut a sliver of skin off his left shoulder.
This will gently shame the master, and remind him of the wisdom of renewing your contract. Thus it has always been between samurai and master.
