You remember the TNG episode that had the, basically, god living on the planet by himself? The planet was attacked by some alien race, which he promptly genocided.
Anyway, one of the scenes involved the Enterprise facing down the god-made spaceship. Riker tells the computer to fire all weapons on full auto. The scene switches to an outside view and you see the Enterprise giving out photons and phasers like a Going Out of Business sale.
So.... why the hell didn't they just do that all the time? Ferrenghi giving you problems? Full auto! Mr. Worf says the shields are down to 80%? Full auto! Borg got you down? That first photon blew away half the cube, if they had said "Full auto" they could have vaporized it before it knew what was happening.
Gah. I hate glaring inconsistancies in a sci-fi show.
