Read Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. Humanity has some uber-tech in that book that they use on alien species with extreme violence. Hell, even in the movie, which was god awful, except for the propoganda pieces and the co-ed shower, the alien tech came from giant bugs that farted plasma up into the stratosphere.
