Why is this office so segregated? Why am I part of the Research Assistant crowd who swap college stories and talk about the news and books that we read? I mean, they're great, but...I want to be part of the Water Cooler Crowd of Administrative Assistants who talk about television from last night. I mean, I have thoughts about American Idol, too. How can I cross this invisible line?

The key is to build up their trust. Start small. Find out who the most popular girl in the Admin Assistant group is. Suck up to her like crazy. See if maybe you can't spread some bad rumors about one of the less popular girls in the group too, that always seems to work.

Whatever you do, you can't just go over and start talking to them. They'll hate that. Nothin' worse than some band geek...uh, I mean, research geek nosing into a conversation like that. Just take my advice.

Well, I don't want to leave my dork squad...uhm, I mean co-worker group, entirely. I like talking about books and news. Rather, my dream is to create a utopian office environment where all workers, regardless of position or rank, are free to intermingle with one another without fear of reprisal. That is my dream.
