E3

SammyLStill
I don't suppose anyone back there has the pull (or guest pass) to get me into E3 this year? I'm trying to interview some game designers for my Electronic Arts capstone project.

Ok, I pulled some strings and got you into E3.

It's an "e-ticket", just bring ID and show up.

SammyLStill
Damnit, you know it doesn't work like that. And you also know I live in New York. :/

Ok, I admit, I was lying. Hey, I know, you could interview me! Wait, let me put on my sunglasses and turn up my "extreme"...

Laser Knight
Ok, shoot!

SammyLStill
Ok, I'll give you the shortened version of the interview. Could you tell me A) what defines an adventure game and B) what makes them so popular/fun?

I don't think you'll need the shades.

Laser Knight
Adventure games, huh? Well, ok, I guess you asked for it.

Laser Knight
A) An adventure game is usually defined as having most of these traits:
  • The player controls and plays the part of a particular character in a story/narrative.
  • The game is goal based with an end or conclusion, which is the same every time the game is played.
  • The plot is advanced through exploration and problem solving, with an emphasis on puzzles and mental activities over quick reflexes.

Those are the major points. However, adventure games have come to be known for various other optional traits as well, such as being funny, very frustrating and stupid, involving all kinds of inventory objects, being liked only by nerds, having puzzles with random, unintuitive solutions, etc etc.

Laser Knight
B) I don't know how to answer this, as adventure games are pretty much the least popular type of game in existence if you go by units sold. Even those edutainment things for preschoolers sell better. I think the reason for this is that only horrible nerds think they're "fun" or "popular".

Laser Knight
No offence, horrible nerd.
