Sound goes in...sound comes out. There's this crazy button on my tape player...labeled "record" and with it, I can copy any protected audio source. Likewise I can sample it at a high quality and then burn it onto a cd. What's the point of music protection when a simple RCA cable is all it takes to overcome it?

True enough, but the simple fact is that the extra steps and equipment required versus simply making a direct digital copy will keep most casual users from making copies for their own personal use or that of their friends. Only those with a financial incentive or mass-reproduction equipment will bother to make analog-to-digital copies.

But wouldn't that mostly just hurt the people making personal copies under 'fair use' laws?
