Just a guess, but you probably aren't following the directions in the engineer's handbook.
How to make a lot of money, engineer style:
1. Get a computer related degree
2. Move to the west coast
3. Be lonely and bitter
I'd say you're probably having trouble with with step one or two.
Step 3 should pose no problem.
