I don't quite understand how people are replying to established threads. Or maybe I'm just really missing something.

However, it's quite simple. You can only respond to threads that you yourself post. We can then choose to make that response visible and reply to it, or not. Sometimes threads are "open" and anyone can post to them. However, those quickly become large and unwieldy unless they are closed almost immediately. I hope you found this informative.

Now, why don't you try it. Type something, and we may make it visible, and perhaps someone will say something amusing.
It would certainly be a welcome change.
My capacity for amusing questions has been exhausted. However, looking at the other (later) posts, I can sense that this isn't uncommon.
You don't NEED AMUSING questions to GET AMUSING answers! LOOK, I'll ask "What time is IT?" and I'll answer "WHOOOO! I'm on FIRE again! LOOK OUT, pedestrians! Don't get CAUGHT ON FIRE!"
