I tend to achieve world domination by slowing building my strength, rapidly deploying settler units while maintaining a high degree of technical research. By trading technology with allies and using good tactics in the inevitable conflicts that arise, I can build my base of power to the point where I can either choose to launch a final assault, or build a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri, which is almost as good. Perhaps you should just build the spacecraft.
