No one physical thing, be it money, drink, or what-have-you, is the root of all evil. Most such talk is a result of a misunderstanding of the original scripture, which actually said that money is the root of all sorts of evil deeds.

Evil has many roots, like a really big, heavily rooted tree. Or a big weed. A really big, nasty weed, and you try to chop it down, and it grows right back, even bigger.

So you try pestiside, but it just laughs and laughs at you. And so you send in shock troops but it just vaporizes them all and so you get big hovertanks with huge lasers on them, but they don't work either, and by this time you're really mad and you send in everything you've got, but in the end you just have to nuke the damn thing from orbit, because it's the only way to be sure!
