What if Old Tired Kirk were to read a remark from Counsellor Deanna Troi which reveals what happens to him in Star Trek VII? What if Q*Bert were to try to bump off Pac-Man, take his place, and become popular four years sooner? What if someone were to get Dad addicted to Civilization? What if the Terminator were to try to take over the Tyrell Corporation? What if the Beatles were to fall in love with Alanis Morissette and irrevocably change the sixties by trying to emulate her? The very fabric of space-time could be irreparably damaged -- someone's got to watch out for these things!

Crow's right. Everything that could have happened via time travel or whatnot has already happened, with people going back in time to do one thing or another, then having others go back and try to fix that, and so on. Why do think the world's such a messed up place? If the universe exploded every time one part of it disagreed slightly with another part, it wouldn't have made it past the first nanosecond.
