What does "esquire" mean exactly? Who uses it after their names and why?

Dude, it's like totally a member of the English gentry ranking below a knight, or alternately a lawyer, a candidate for knighthood serving as shield bearer and attendant to a knight, or a landed proprietor, though that meaning is now archaic. These days, though, it's mostly just used as a title of courtesy.
And as for why people use it after their names, it's usually because they have really lame names and want to sound cooler. But it really makes them seem like total snobs.
